Project Safety Management
Project Safety Management processes include all activities of the project sponsor/
owner and the performing organization which determine safety policies, objectives,
and,responsibilities so the project is planned and executed in a manner that prevents
accidents, which cause,or have the potential to cause, personal injury, fatalities, or
property damage. Forconvenience, the term safety management is used throughout
this extension to include both safety management and health management. Project
Safety Management interacts with all other project managementprocesses and process
groups. See Figure 13-1 for an overview of the processes and respective inputs, tools
and techniques, and outputs for Project Safety Management.
Active communication must beimplemented to provide clarification to all stakeholders
regarding the project’s safety objectives and the implications of their execution.
On urban projects, the neighbor community is a majorstakeholder more so than in
any other project, and special attention must be dedicated to the community’s needs
and expectations, especially regarding safety, which can have a great impact on the
project,sometimes regardless of the existence of permits. However, because the issue
of communication management is addressed in Chapter 10 of the PMBOK

Third Edition and this extension, it willnot be detailed in this chapter.
Other major stakeholders include statutory authorities, usually comprised of representative
bodies from local, regional and federal government, and, as in the case ofnuclear and oil and gas, for example, industry regulators. These bodies have their own
stakeholders and respond to them in the ways described in the Government Extension
to the PMBOK Guide ThirdEdition.
