About the AuthorRoald Dahl was born in South Wales in 1916. His parents were Norwegian, but they lived in the United Kingdom so that the Dahl children could attend English schools, which they considered to be the best in the world. Roald, one of five children, hungered for adventure. As a young man he took a job with Shell Oil in Africa. When World War II broke out he joined the Royal Air Force as a fighterpilot. He sustained terrible injuries as a result, and even almost died in a plane crash in 1942. It was after this near tragedy that his writing career began. He wrote articles for prominent magazines, including The New Yorker. He didn’t begin writing stories for children until he had children of his own. He said that he couldn’t find any children’s stories that were appealing enough to hischildren. James and the Giant Peach was written in 1961. He wrote his many best-selling books for children from a small hut at the base of his garden in Buckinghamshire, England, where he lived with his wife Felicity and their children. Roald Dahl died in 1990, but his memory is alive and well at the Roald Dahl Children’s Gallery in Buckinghamshire and through the stories, movies and plays of his work.About the Playwright

About the Production
If you have read the book James and the Giant Peach, you can imagine what a challenge it would be to present a stage version. How does one depict a peach the size of a house hurling through the air being carried by 500 seagulls? How can astage version show the same giant peach bobbing along in the shark infested Atlantic Ocean, it’s main characters perched precariously on top? While we don’t want to give away our secrets, and thus decrease your enjoyment of theatre magic, we will tell you about a couple of artistic collaborators who are working to make it happen. A slew of puppets are being created especially for this production by...
