THE FUNDATION
The Prince of Asturias Foundation was founded in the city of Oviedo on 24th September 1980 at a formal ceremony presided over by His Royal Highness the Prince of Asturias, heir to thethrone of Spain, who was accompanied by his parents, their Majesties the King and Queen of Spain.
The essential aims of the Foundation are to consolidate links between the Principality and the Princeof Asturias, and to contribute to encouraging and promoting scientific, cultural and humanistic values that form part of mankind's universal heritage. With this purpose, the Prince of Asturias Awardswere initiated in 1981, divided into eight categories (Arts, Social Sciences, Communication and Humanities, International Cooperation, Technical and Scientific Research, Letters, Sport and Concord).H.R.H. the Prince of Asturias, D. Felipe de Borbón, presents these Awards each autumn at the Campoamor Theatre in Oviedo.
The award presentation ceremony is considered as one of the most importantcultural events in the international agenda. Throughout its history, these awards have been honoured with different recognitions, such as UNESCO’s declaration in 2004 acknowledging the extraordinarycontribution of these awards to mankind's cultural heritage.
Stages of the Ceremony
The grand presentation ceremony for the 2011 Prince of Asturias Awards was held on 21st October at 6.30 p.m., andlasted 90 minutes. The presidential table includes Their Royal Highnesses, the Prince and Princess of Asturias. The President of the Principality of Asturias, Mr. Francisco Álvarez-Cascos, is on thePrince's right, and the President of the foundation, Mr. Matías Rodríguez Inciarte, is on the Princess´ left. Her Majesty Queen Sophia usually watches the ceremony from the royal Box, on the first tier ofthe theatre.The Award winners sit on the left hand side of the stage.
