The Masque of the Red Death
The Red Death is a plague which has been killing people for a long time. To escape the dangers of
the plague, Prince Prospero takes a thousand healthy friends to one ofhis distant castles, a
strangely designed, strangely decorated building. One night, the Prince invites his friends to a
masked ball. At midnight, a stranger arrives at the ball, dressed as the RedDeath. Everyone is
very scared. The Prince runs to attack the stranger, but suddenly falls to the floor, dead. A group of
people pull off the stranger’s mask and costume, but they are empty. Thestranger is the Red
Death himself and within a short time, all the people die.
The Pit and the Pendulum
A prisoner has been condemned to death by the Spanish Inquisition. He is alone in a terrifying,dark cell. He does not know when or how he will die. After falling asleep, the prisoner then wakes
to find himself tied by leather straps to a wooden bed. The cell is full of rats. A pendulum abovehim
swings lower and lower until he is in danger of being cut in two by it. He saves himself by getting
the rats to eat through the straps. Then the cell walls begin to shine with the glow of fire.The
burning walls of the cell close in on the prisoner, but he cannot escape. Just when he thinks his
end has come, the prisoner is saved by the arrival of the French Army. In this story, Poe showshis
skill at building up an atmosphere of suspense and terror.
The Murders in the Rue Morgue
The story is set in Paris. The narrator and Monsieur C. Auguste Dupin read in a newspaper of theterrible murders of Madame L’Espanaye and her daughter, Camille, which were committed in the
rue Morgue. Madame L’Espanaye’s throat was cut; her daughter was strangled and pushed up a
chimney. All thewitnesses heard two voices, one deep, one high, but could not agree what
