The Sophists vs. Socrates

Sophists - means “the wise ones”, they were committed to individualism and relativism
Unlike philosophers before them, they claimed to be wise enough to teach whateveryou might want to know as long as you were willing to pay them the required fees.

Sophists traveled more than ordinary Greeks and they learned that there is a real variety of “correct” ways to dothings depending upon one’s perspective. They believed there was no universally appropriate way of doing anything. Therefore there can be no absolutes of any kind. Everything is relative.Appearances are reality, at least the only reality any of us can know. They didn’t believe in an objective truth.

Plato felt that they argued for the sake of argument. However, they were very popularin society. Plato blamed them for the break down of Greek society’s values and the killing of Socrates.

Classical Period in Greek Philosophy:
Socrates - made his living as a stonemason and hadbeen a Greek soldier. He was not a wealthy man, but prided himself on not accepting money to teach philosophy. By his 40s he had developed a reputation throughout Greece for being a freethinkingintellectual who was not afraid to question established ideas and practices. He was executed by the city of Athens as a capital criminal when he was 70.

Socrates never wrote a word of philosophy.Everything we know about him we know through Plato whose favorite form of writing was the dialogue, a literary creation that shows a discussion or exchange of ideas. Some of these dialogues however don’trepresent Socrates’ ideas, but rather Plato’s.

Socrates was famous for traveling around Greece asking simple questions about obvious things. To him, asking questions seemed the best way ofderiving at the truth. False ideas could be revealed as false by persistent questioning. Unlike the Sophists, Socrates, Plato and Aristotle believed that statements could be made about the way things...
