The supermarket industry is one of the most important industry in the world. Now-a-days in large urban cities supermarkets act as a basic necessity to live. It makes their lives easier bymaking everything available under one roof on competitive prices compared to the local shops. The idea of supermarkets originated in the UNITED STATES in 1930s and took over the world. (EncyclopediaBritannica,2009)

GENERAL UK SUPERMARKET INDUSTRIES
The supermarket industry in the UK is highly competitive and includes powerful players like Tesco, ASDA and Sainsbury’s which dominate the market. Themarket leader and no. 3 retailer in the world TESCO has a market share of just over 30.4%. With over 2000 stores in the UK Tesco has a strong base and presence all over the UK.
It employs over 280000people all over the country.
Tesco is using a variety of stores in six different formats. Adapted to the local market conditions, Tesco has stores which are different in size and range of productsthey sell.
The first one is Tesco Extra which operates mainly out of town area and offers nearly the whole range of products.
These stores have floor space area up to 125000 square feet. The nextsmaller version is Tesco Superstores. These are large supermarkets with smaller range of non food goods as compare to Tesco Extra. For inner city area and high street areas Tesco has stores up to 12000square feet which are called Tesco Metro. In the area of convince stores Tesco Express operates small shops which are mainly focused on food and beverages on high margin level (Tescoplc, 2009)
