The Fall of the House of Usher ( Edgar Allan Poe)
Poe´s story “The Fall of the House of Usher” (1839) relates the story of Roderick Usher.
The narrator is the one who tells the story.
Thenarrator approaches the House of Usher “during the , dark, and soundless day in the autumn of the year”
This house property of his old friend Roderick Usher. It is very gloomy and mysterious.
Thenarrator writes that the house seems to have a rare and evil atmosphere but the structure itself is fairly solid.
The narrator reveals that he is to stay in this house because his friend, Roderick,sent him a letter asking for his company. Roderick was feeling bodily and emotionally ill.
In the Usher family, an ancient clan, they were all in a direct line of descendent.
The inside of thehouse is just as terrorific as the outside. The narrator makes his way through the long passages and to the room where Roderick is waiting.
The narrator notes that his friend is paler and lessenergetic than he once was.
Roderick tells the narrator that he suffers from nerves and fear. His senses are heightened. Roderick seems afraid of his own house.
Further, Roderick´s sister, MadeleineUsher has taken ill with a mysterious illness that the doctors cannot identify.
The narrator spend several days trying to cheer Roderick. He listens to Roderick playing the guitar, he reads toRoderick, he sits with him for hours. But he is still sad.
Roderick think that the house is unhealthy, just as the narrator had supposed.
Soon, Madeleine dies, and Roderick decides to bury her for 15days in the tombs below the house. He wants to do this because he is afraid that the doctors might use her body for scientific examinations .
The narrator helps Roderick put the body in the tomb. Henotes that she has rosy cheeks. Roderick confides to the narrator that he and Madeleine were twins.
Over the next few days, Roderick becomes more uneasy.
One night, the narrator cannot sleep....
