The FAO is a specialized agency of the United Nations that makes international efforts to defeat hunger: the unacceptable situation that some 800 millionpeople continue to suffer from chronic hunger and malnutrition These people lead a life of misery and do not have the most basic of human rights: the right to food. FAO serves both, developed anddeveloping countries. FAO acts as a neutral forum where all nations meet as equals to negotiate agreements and debate policy. FAO (Food and Agriculture Organization) is also a source of knowledge andinformation, and helps developing countries and countries in transition modernize and improve agriculture, forestry and fisheries practices, ensuring good nutrition and food security for all. Its Latinmotto, fiat panis, translates into English as ‘’let there be bread’’.
FAO was founded on 16 October 1945 in Quebec, Canada. Its headquarters are in Rome. It has 192 members (191 states and the EuropeanCommunity). The Special Programme for Food Security (SPFS) is FAO’s most important goal to reduce the number of hungry people in the world to half its number by 2015. Governments alone cannot endhunger. Public and private sectors, civil society and collective and individual resources are all needed to break out of the vicious circle of chronic hunger.
