The French Wars Of Religion (1559 – 1598)

These were political and social confrontations in France due to the Valois dynasty weakness
before the catholic conflict and the factional aristocratic disputes; such as, the House of
Bourbon andHouse of Guise (Lorraine).

Even though there was a constant persecution, the Calvinism had power over cities, universities
and the French nobility during the first years of the XVI century. Theprotestant evangelization
was coordinated by a group of preachers from Geneva sent by John Calvin.

The King Henry II prohibited the Protestantism, but his suddenly death (in June of this year)was
interpreted like a divine signal by the reformers, and the number of conversions increased.
Francis II, the 15 years old son of Henry, ruled the monarchy. He was manipulated by the Guisefamily, especially for Francis and the Cardinal Lorraine who decided to continue with the
protestant persecution campaign, but they could not prevent a plot to kidnap the King.
This wascalled the Conspiracy of Amboise, prepared by the nobility in March in 1560. It was a
failure. The protestant nobles, responsible of the conspiracy, were called the Huguenots.

Since the death ofFrancis I and his smart sister, the King of France tried to restore the Roman
Catholicism. Meanwhile, a minority group - the Huguenots- became a political party. Very soon
the Huguenots, hadsome distinguished nobles like Henry of Navarre, Antonio de Bourbon, the
admiral Coligny and Louis de Conde, the best French general. In 1562 an infighting religious civil war
broke out due toreligious and political causes. It lasted until 1594. The most important event was the
bloody slaughter of San Bartolommeo.

When the Huguenots leaders went to Paris for the wedding of their King,Henry of Navarre, thousands
of them were killed; along with other million Huguenots. This very sad day it is known as “The Night of
San Bartolommeo”.
