TRANSLATION’S COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS OF ABSTRACTS IN ENGLISH AND SPANISH
(ANÁLISIS COMPARATIVO DE TRADUCCIÓN DE RESUMENES EN INGLÉS Y CASTELLANO)
ABSTRACT

RESUMEN: Cuando comparamos el mismo texto en inglés y castellano observamos en ocasiones varias diferencias, a veces se debe a una mala traducción o a veces a que la traducción así lo requiere. En este trabajo se analizan seis pares deresúmenes de carácter económico, en castellano e inglés, de artículos científicos y técnicos recogidos de varias revistas, intentando profundizar en si estas diferencias provocan la pérdida de la calidad de la traducción.

Finalmente, podemos concluir que aunque encontremos cambios en las traducciones, nos siguen aportando la misma información e igual de técnica, con lo cual no perdemos calidad altraducir los resúmenes.


ABSTRACT: When we compare the same text in English and Spanish in occasions we observe several differences, sometimes they due to a poor translation or sometimes because it is required by the translation. This work analyze six pairs of abstracts with economic character, in Spanish and English, of scientific and technical articles collect from several magazines,trying deepen if these differences provoke the lost of translation quality.

Finally, we can conclude that although we find changes in the translations, they still provide us the same information and the same technique, for that reason, we don’t lose quality with the abstracts translations.

INTRODUCTION


It is known that when we find a translation of an original text written in English to Spanish and backwards, sometimes it is not translated correctly and the text loses its quality, fordifferent causes, for example, because the vocabulary has not been selected correctly, the sentences doesn’t have sense and we don’t understand the information…

This quality is more important at scientific and technical text and articles, because they are read by many people and they serve of important information, other texts are based on these articles.

Furthermore we have to add thespecial attention that the people who translate these type of articles have to have because these text contain technical terms and they must put care the selection of the vocabulary, and the sense of the sentences, for the reason that a little change on the real information can cause a bad interpretation of the article or the text.


HYPOTHESIS

Thus, at this assignment we are going to analyzesix pairs of abstracts in English and Spanish. We want to know what mistakes use to be committed in these kinds of articles. Also we want to conclude if these mistakes cause a quality descent. And if it is possible to know what of these mistakes are more damaging for the quality.


METHODOLOGY

For this research, the methodology that is going to be used is simple. It is divided on threeparts:

1ª We are going to look mistakes and options at microstructural or local level. We will take into account things like: the correct vocabulary selection, terminology used, correct phraseology sense and syntax.

2º We will analyze at macrostructural or global level: we must look at the information, if it is the same at the Spanish and English versions and the structure of the texts, ifthey are the same.
3º Finally we will look at the administration of the information, for instance: if the content expression order has been changed and the number of sentences and words.
