HUMAN FACTORS
Many studies of the human-computer interface have been done within the field of human factors and ergonomics, the sciences concernedwith the factors of the working environment and how they affect the human worker. In this tradition the emphasis is not so much on charging the worker but on building workstations and systems to suithuman comfort and dignity. Such factors as light, sound, climate, location, and screen flicker work together to create a stressful or a comfortable working environment. When workers spend long hours, perhaps every day all day long, working with a compute, the stressful effects of the workstation may accumulate. The most hotly debated issue has been the health effects of the video display terminal(VDT), which includes all video screens for computer input or output. Workers and their advocates have claimed that microwave radiation from VDTs cause eye damage and poses threats to pregnant women. Anumber of research studies have found that VDT operators report more physical health problems, apparently related to workstation stress, than workers not working at computer screens (e.g., Hill andKroemer, 1986 Grar djean, Hunting, and Pidermann, 1983).
After an extensive study of the effects of the VDTs, the national academy of sciences (1983) issued a report with the conclusion that the useof VDTs in work settings did not yield dangerous radiation levels, vision impairment, nor anatomical damage. However, the report called for additional research to substantiate this conclusion. Theyalso urged VDT manufacturers to their decisions upon factors such as likelihood of radiation and flicker. Recent studies of VDT operator preferences have uncovered some important departures from typicalstandards.
Vision fatigue is the most common problem for operators spending long hours at their computers screen. This can often be improved greatly by adding shades and non glare screen filters....
