* Zero conditional:
* First conditional:
ZERO AND FIRST CONDITIONAL
* Sentences describing a general truth or fact use the present tense inboth clauses. (Zero conditional).
Example: Most metals rust if they come in contact with water and oxygen.
* Sentences talking about a real future possibility use a clause in presenttense (the clause starting with “if”), and another clause in future tense with the auxiliary “will”. (First conditional).
Example: If you have one of these filters, you will never need tochange the oil in your car.
* In both cases, the clause starting with “if” conditions the other clause (this clause depends on the other clause starting with “if”. It is only true if theother is also true.)
* In both cases, the clauses can invert their order. However, a comma is needed at the end of the clause starting with “if” if it starts the sentence. If it comesin second place, a comma is not needed.
Examples: If we are successful(,) we will save many lives. (Comma needed).
We will save many lives if we are successful. (No comma needed).
