MAJOR CHARACTERS ProtagonistName: Dorian GrayTraits: (deduced and given by the author) Dorian is a young and beautiful character in the novel. Is the representation of youth, beauty and innocence. Through the story he is influenced and changed by Lord Henry. He gets obsessed with youth and beauty after he talked to Lord Henry. Conflicts: (types of conflicts present)He has ainternal conflict with himself, created by the corrupt influence of Lord Henry that its affecting his innocence, choosing to be a good or a bad. Also he has an external conflict, as he can’t let other people see the portrait because it shows the state of his soul. | ANTAGONISTName: Lord HenryTraits: (deduced and given by the author) Lord henry is an intelligent guy that has a lot of opinions aboutthings. He is always attending to social events like theaters and dinners with some important people in London. He is the one changing Dorian Gray as he is the representation of corrupt ideas.Conflicts: (types of conflicts present)He is not in having a conflict himself, but he is the one creating the internal conflict inside Dorian Gray, as he is “infecting” Dorian mind with corrupt ideas. |FOILName: Basil HallwardTraits: (deduced and given by the author) Basil is a painter, friend of Dorian. He get obsessed with Dorian look in his arts. He is a representation of serious ideas. He is worried about Lord Henry influences over Dorian. Conflicts: (types of conflicts present)He is involved in the conflict that Dorian have towards the rest of the people as he can’t let the people see theportrait. He ends up killed by Dorian when he goes to see him. |
MINOR CHARACTERS Name: James VaneRound/Flat: FlatHe is Sibyl Vane brother and also a sailor. He wants to protect her sister from Dorian. After all Sibyl die and he gets back to London to avenge her sister but he ends up killed on the country house of Dorian while trying to enter through the window. | Name: Sibyl VaneRound/Flat: RoundSheis a poor but beautiful actor. She got in love with Dorian but his love made her understand the waste of time of acting. When she stops acting good Dorian left her. This with his family problems made her suicide. | Name: VictorRound/Flat: FlatHe is Dorian Gray servant. Dorian was worried that he saw the portrait so he sends him to do unnecessary favors so he doesn’t have time to see the portrait.|
NARRATIONThe novel has an anonymous narrator. He can read people thoughts. He show us everyone emotions and perspectives, he tells the facts as they happen and at the same time he tells the emotions of characters. Mostly he shows the emotions of Dorian Gray, Lord Henry and Sibyl Vane.IRONY:The book has a lot of irony; the biggest one is the obsession of Dorian with beauty and youth. Because inthe attempt of having immortality and infinite beauty and young ends killing himself because the portrait was getting him crazy.Also he complains that no one can see the portrait because is show his soul. But in the first chapters he begs that his soul get into the portrait and the portrait gets old instead of him.Another irony is the one in Sibyl Vane’s love with Dorian, because for thinking toomuch on his love, she finish losing him.TONE/MOOD:The tone of the model is something similar to the point of view of Dorian. As the mood changes with the state of the influence that is with him. When he is innocent, the book is something more innocent, after he reads the book, the mood changes to a one of a point of view more of lord Henry’s. As the book began a disgust against humankind.SYMBOLISM:There is a lot of symbolism in the novel, one of the most important are the portrait and the yellow book. The portrait means the reflection of the representation of Dorian soul or Dorian inner self. The yellow book represents the corrupt influence of Lord Henry over Dorian as it was given by him and after he reads it he turns into an evil Dorian.There are other small symbols like Lord Henry’s...
