Introduction

This report provides figures and data, which have been collected during the first academic semester and they are related to two touristic attractions in particular: National Trust Formby and MOSI the museum of science and industry inManchester. Each section is significantly shorter than it would be necessary for a complete university report. The purpose is to offer a bird eye view of the main touristic subdivisions that should involve these two kinds of visitors’ attractions.

Definitions

1. Natural Attraction: Its features are within the natural landscape.
2. Man made purpose built Attraction: Designed to attract people.History of the sites

Formby physical extension is spread within an area of 517 acres of which, 186 acres are woodland and 1.05 miles is the extension of the beach. National Trust bought the property from the Blundell’s family through another society, which is nowadays still running part of its business within the National Trust, back in 1967. The initial cost was 20,000£ for 450 acres, theremaining land was bought later in little pockets from private neighbors. The coastal area was fragmented between many families but the Blundell’s family was the main owner. Today, Natural England owns the North side of the entire estate and the National Trust in cooperation with the local Council administrates the South side. Before National Trust purchased the property there wasn’t too muchpublic access, there was only a plantation of pine trees originally planted to stop the dunes from coming in and inundating the housing areas. This is an actual problem for Formby but is managed in a different way. The pine woodland was originally planted between 1903 and 1921 to stop the land erosion and the coast was at least 150-160mt further out at that period. The erosion increased since 1900’swith the creation of the port of Liverpool. New channels changed the flow of the water and the speed of erosion (Smith, P.H.1978b). The National Trust bought this section of the coast because it was relatively unspoiled and one of the aims of the Trust is to provide public access for the community.

The Museum of Science and Industry in Manchester cover an area of 7.5 acres, it is the largest ofits kind in Britain and is developed in 5 listed and protected buildings, thus, the organization managing them are bound by law to retain their history. MOSI collection is unique, however, MOSI itself is part of the collection as living history. The site has been developed from the most oldest passengers railway station in the world, built in 1830 to connect Manchester industries to Liverpoolserving a population which spring up from 50,000 to 250,000 units between 1830 and 1844. After that it became a good railway for shipping cotton fiber and clothes. The museum was founded in the 1960’s by the City Council which wanted retain its industrial heritage collecting machinery and stories. In 1970’s the site closed as railway station in a really bad architectural situation, Government couldn’tsell the site but allowed the purchase in 1978 of the whole estate for a Pound Sterling because all the repair and capital investments they were bound to involve.
