Policy and Procedure Best Practices Overview
Basics gleaned from best practices research
When managing policies and procedures, 1 organizations should adhere to a few key principles. APQC hasgleaned the following best practices from Collaborative Benchmarking studies with organizations that have developed policy and procedure management programs that consistently prove valuable toorganizational progress.








    

Create a clear outline of reporting structures, responsibilities, and formal procedures for processing documents. Ensure a consistent review and approvalprocess by instituting regular deadlines, automated notices, and detailed escalation processes with well-defined roles to encourage participation. Communicate policy and procedure changes in a waythat best fits the organizational culture, be it through e-mail alerts, newsletters, television broadcasts, or intranet sites. Select appropriate measures to evaluate policies and procedures. These neednot be sophisticated or even formalized, but they should gauge the usability of the policies, procedures, and related systems and processes. Focus on the user experience of all policy and proceduredocuments and systems. Keep all elements of the documents and systems as simple as possible. Hold specific roles accountable and establish clear oversight for those roles. Set explicit, reasonableexpectations. Adhere to a consistent set of standards that limit variability between documents and update/review processes.
