Metallica is an American heavy metal band from Los Angeles, California, formed in 1981. The band was founded when James Hetfield responded to an advertisement that drummer Lars Ulrich had posted in alocal newspaper.  Metallica's early releases included fast tempos, instrumentals, and aggressive musicianship that placed the band as one of the founding "big four" of thrashmetal alongside Slayer,Megadeth, and Anthrax.
James Alan Hetfield was born on August 3, 1963. He is the rhythm guitarist, co-founder, main songwriter, and lead vocalist for the American thrash metal band.
Lars Ulrich wasborn December 26, 1963, he is the drummer of the band and one of the founding members
Kirk Lee Hammett was born November 18, 1962, he is the lead guitarist and a songwriter in the band and has been amember of the band since 1983.
Jason Curtis Newsted was the bassist of the band. Joining Metallica in 1986 after Cliff Burton's death, Newsted remained a member until 2001.
Robert Trujillo wasborn on October 23, 1964. He is the current bassist of the band. He came to the band on 2003 after the band recorded St. Anger.

Kill ‘em all
Band members decided to kick Mustaine out of theband due to drug and alcohol abuse and violent behavior just prior to the sessions on April 11, 1983. Exodus guitarist Kirk Hammett flew in to replace Mustaine the same afternoon.
Metallica's firstlive performance with Hammett was on April 16, 1983 at the nightclub The Showplace in Dover, New Jersey.
Ride the lightning
Metallica recorded its second studio album, Ride the Lightning. It wasReleased in August 1984. Other songs on the album include "For Whom the Bell Tolls", "Fade to Black", "Creeping Death" and the instrumental "The Call of Ktulu".
