La terminología de la ASTM (G15) define la corrosión como “la reacción química o electroquímica entre un material, usualmente un metal y su medio ambiente, que produce un deterioro del material y de sus propiedades”. Para el acero embebido en el concreto (hormigón), la corrosión da como resultado la formación de óxido que tiene 2 a 4 veces el volumen del acero original y lapérdida de sus óptimas propiedades mecánicas. La corrosión produce además descascaramiento y vacíos en la supericie del acero de refuerzo, reduciendo la capacidad resistente como resultado de la reducción de la sección transversal.
