Crime and Society
As a twenty year old in college I have grown up and become accustomed to hearing of and seeing crimes be committed. Even if you don’t see them in person, crime is all over thenews and it is the first thing you read about in the newspaper. Many people have become infamous for the crimes they have committed because the media coverage they get. I can remember crimes beingcommitted as young kid and some were petty crimes and some not so much. The effect crime has on our society is huge; the United States has the most incarcerated prisoners in the world.
I have never beenthe victim of a serious crime, sure I have had some of my valuables stolen but I have never really been the victim of a serious crime. Sure, I know a bunch of people who have been arrested for drugrelated crimes but I don’t consider those to be serious crimes. If you are selling drugs you are simply trying to make money and it is your customers and buyers who are choosing to buy the drug. Iremember as a kid I was probably seven years old I was at a seven eleven with my dad getting a couple of things and as we walked out across the street we saw a liquor store being robbed I don’t think theman tried to steal any money, he just grabbed a thirty rack of beer and took off. Also a couple of years ago I remember seeing on the news that somebody was murdered in Newport and the part that scaredme was the fact that her body was dumped at the reservoir near my house and where I work. My boss makes me pick trash around the reservoir and I could have been the one to find the body.
Thereason why people commit certain crimes may never be answered. I think it is a combination of a lot of factors that can push some people to the tipping point. I think that some acts in our society that arelabeled as “crimes” should not be. To me it does not make sense that smoking tobacco is legal, which is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. If the criminal justice systems main purpose...
