RESUMEN
"DESGASTE PROFESIONAL DE LOS PROFESORES
Y
CLIMA SOCIAL ESCOLAR”

El presente trabajo, "Desgaste profesional de los profesores y clima social
escolar" describe las principales fuentes de desgaste profesional y su impacto en el clima
social escolar desde la perspectiva de los profesores de enseñanza básica de cuatro
escuelas de la ciudad de Santiago de Chile, queatienden niños de nivel socioeconómico
bajo.
Los datos se obtuvieron del análisis de seis grupos focales realizados con
profesores con el objetivo de recabar información sobre su percepción del clima social
escolar y sobre las principales variables que a su juicio influyen en él. La muestra incluyó
a 58 profesores y 38 profesoras, de escuelas primarias de nivel socio-ecómico bajo de la
ciudadde Santiago de Chile.
El burnout, o agotamiento profesional representa con síntomas como dolores de
cabeza permanentes, dolores de espalda, molestias gastrointestinales y diversos
problemas psicosomáticos. En el plano de la salud mental se presentan índices de
angustia, irritabilidad, hiperactividad, trastornos del sueño, baja motivación y disforias.
Las principales fuentes de desgasteprofesional descritas por los profesores en este
estudio se refieren a: las relaciones con los estamentos directivos, las condiciones
económicas percibidas como insatisfactorias, la infraestructura física, la relación con los
pares, el contexto psicosocial de donde provienen los alumnos, el exceso de carga
docente, la percepción de una formación profesional insuficiente, dificultades en ladisciplina producto del aumento de la violencia en los niños y falta de espacio y tiempo
para la comunicación.

SUMMARY
Teachers' Burnout and School Social Climate
The present paper deals with the main sources ofteachers' burnout and its
relationship with school social climate. This study was held in four low socio-economic
elementary schools, in Santiago de Chile, as a part of a research project to analyze social
school climate and the developing of strategies to improve it.
Teachers burnout shows up as permanent headaches, backaches, gastrointestinal
disorders, and other psychosomatic disorders. In themental health domain, it is
characterized by anxiety, irritability, hyperreactivity, sleep disorders, low motivation and
disphoric mood. Those symptoms represent the most current motives for teachers' work
absenteeism.
Naming theses symptoms as "professional burnout" and not as simply Stress, or
Depression, strengthen the link between these problems and the working situation. It
means thatthey are no longer considered as personal problems, but as a work or
professional problem. Thus responsibility for addressing and coping this kind of
disorders is not restricted to the teacher herself, but it has to be assumed by the
institutional context.
Data was obtained from the analysis of six focus groups held with teachers, whose
purpose was to have information about teachers perceptionof school social climate and
the main variables having an impact on it. The sample included 58 male and 38 female
teachers, coming from four low socioeconomic primary schools, from Santiago de Chile.
These teachers work with students of 7th and 8th grades.
