Jorge Arandes was born in Barcelona in July
1929. In 1947, when he was not yet 18, he
began working forRadio Miramar. In 1949
he started work at Spain’s national radio
station Radio Nacional de España (RNE) as a
presenter. After this, in 1955 he became
head of programming and later the director
of RNE in Barcelona, the representative of
Spanish television (TVE) in Barcelona, the
director of the whole of RNE´s programme
network in Madrid and the managing
director of RTVE in Barcelona.Jorge Arandes, nació en Barcelona en julio
de 1929. En 1947, cuando todavía no tenía
18 años, empezó a trabajar en Radio
Miramar. En 1949 entró en RNE como
locutor, después pasó a ser en 1955 jefe de
programa y más tarde director de RNE en
Barcelona, delegado de TVE en Barcelona,
director de toda la red de programas de RNE
en Madrid, y director gerente de RTVE en
Barcelona.

On which channel?
Radio Barcelona. He was one of the
prodigies working in radio after the war. He
was from Valladolid, and ifthe war ended in
1939 he must have arrived here in
Barcelona in 1940. He came together with
the National troops. More than a presenter
of scripted texts he was an improviser. He
would broadcast many programmes, ranging
from a theatre performance to a bullfight or
a football match, and then he introduced the
narration of films, which had never been
done before.

RadioBarcelona. Era uno de los prodigios
que había en la radio después de la
postguerra. Era de Valladolid, y si la guerra
acabó en el año 39 debió llegar aquí a
Barcelona en el año 40, entró con las tropas
nacionales. Más que un locutor de textos
escritos era un locutor de improvisación.
Retransmitía desde una función de teatro
hasta una corrida de toros o un partido de
fútbol, y entoncesintrodujo la narración de
películas que es algo que no se había hecho
nunca.

I began to form a relationship with him
because it was a time when I had started to
work in radio and I was taking my first steps
in radio Miramar. I was an apprentice and
they placed me with him, as he was a
master of programmes. We built up a great
friendship, because he was very kind and a
very nice person andI held him in great
regard, for me he was like a father within
the profession. I would go with him to the
cinema to see the films that he would later
broadcast on the radio. We would both go in
the afternoons, and then I would accompany
him and listen to how he would put the
commentary in the gaps, in the silences that
exist in the film sound tracks and that is
how I learnt to do it.Yo comencé a establecer una relación con él
porque era cuando yo comenzaba a trabajar
en la radio y hacía mis primeros pinitos en
Radio Miramar. Yo era un aprendiz y me
pusieron con él, que era un maestro, en un
programa. Llegamos a tener una gran
amistad, porque era muy cordial y muy
buena persona y yo le tenía mucho afecto,
para mí era como un padre profesional. Yo
iba con él al cine aver las películas que
luego él retransmitía por la radio. Íbamos
los dos por la tarde y luego por la noche yo
también le acompañaba y escuchaba dónde
introducía los comentarios en los blancos, en
los silencios que hay en la banda sonora de
la película y así es como aprendí a hacerlo.
