Skin cancer
Several factors cause skin cancer, exposure to ultraviolet radiation (U.V) and toxic chemicals are two of the most significant ones.

Skin cancer
Skin cancer is a paramount problem nowadays. “Each year there are more new cases of skincancer than the combined incidence of the breast, prostate, lung and colon” (Skin cancer facts, n.d. ¶2). Scientific research has been deepening on the features, causes, diagnosis and treatment for this disease. Several factors cause skin cancer, exposure to ultraviolet radiation (UV) and toxic chemicals are two of the most significant ones
Exposure to UV radiation is one imminent cause of skincancer. Firstly, UVA rays pose a major risk for cancer formation. UVA radiation is constant and can penetrate the skin deeply, up to the basal layer which is responsible for new skin cells formation. Damage in this area causes a weakening of DNA’s self repair function through the mutation of the P53 tumor suppressor gene (Brannon, 2008). This implies that damage cell division continues helplesslywhich may eventually lead to lethal melanoma formation. Furthermore, UVA rays are more directly linked to artificial radiation sources such as tanning beds. The latter can cause suntan and sunburn respectively, both skin’s responses to mild and strong direct DNA damage. According to the Skin Cancer Foundation (n.d. understanding UVA and UVB, ¶8) “people who use tanning salons are 2.5 times morelikely to develop squamous cell carcinoma and basal cell carcinoma than people who do not”. Secondly, UVB rays can cause skin cancer. A history of repeated direct UVB exposure is proven to be linked to an increased risk for melanoma and non-melanoma tumors (Naylor, n.d.). Strong UVB radiation is commoner in tropical countries; during summer between 10:00pm and 2:00pm (Brannon, 2008) and all year-roundin high altitude where snow and ice bounce the rays to create twice as much impact (Skin Cancer Foundation, n.d.). Shortly, UVA and UVB exposure can cause skin cancer.
Nevertheless, UV exposure is not the only skin cancer hazard. Exposure to toxic chemicals is another cause of this cancer. Firstly, polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in motor oil encourage cancerous formations. PAHs arepotent atmospheric pollutants consisting of fused aromatic rings found in crude oil and incomplete combustion of coal and tobacco combustion (Agency for Toxic Substances and Disease registry, 1997; Chemicals that cause cancer, n.d.)
