High Yellow White Trash
Being multiracial can be problematic. This is clearly shown in the short story entitled “High Yellow White Trash” by Lisa Page. She is biracial and her world is turned upsidedown when her black father and white mother divorced. When this occurs, it is clearly seen how Lisa´s life becomes a process in which she is in a constant search for identity.
First, Lisa changesdramatically after her parents´ divorce. Her world is divided into two: the white world of her mother and the black world of her father which disturbS her quite a lot. She feels strong and conflictingemotions due to it, because she is not accepted by her mother´s family at all as she is biracial. On the other hand, in her father´s world she feels more comfortable and sure of herself. So, she isemotionally confused because she is in a struggle to fit in one of these two worlds.
Second, Lisa gets closer to her father trying to avoid the white part of herself. At first, she tries to act as awhite girl, but as the story progresses, she gradually understands that she has never felt relaxed in this way. Her mother and other people are always correcting her “defects”. For example, she istold, especially by her mother, how she should behave and speak, because she feels more identified with black people and she speaks and dress as a black girl. That is why, she wants to escape from thewhite world she dislikes and she considers that she does not belong to. As a result, she feels more at home when she is with her father.
Finally, Lisa accepts her cultural background. Although she knowsthat the black world and the white world are very different from each other, she has learned to accept her heritage as a part of her life. It means that she is able to deal with it and she is notworried about the emotional traumas that it caused her when she was a child.
