Loneliness is probably something we all feel at some point in our lives. Some more than others. It’s like a sickness. In Catcher in the Rye, Holden Caulfield is surroundedwith people with whom he could relate to. Instead, he chooses to distance himself from them and alienate himself. He is not willing to accept anyone because he thinks of almost everyone as phonies. Thisleads him into a loneliness he created for himself to stay away from all the “fake” people around him, but it also depresses him because he doesn’t have anybody.
Holden tries to interact and formrelationships with others, but finds it very hard because he thinks almost everyone is phony. This, as a result, makes him lonely. He says this about many of the people he has met or known throughouthis life. About leaving Elkton Hills, one of the schools he had gone to, he says, “One of the biggest reasons I left Elkton Hills was because I was surrounded by phonies. That’s all. They were coming inthe goddam window. For instance, they had this headmaster, Mr. Haas, that was the phoniest bastard I ever met in my life,” (Salinger 13). Although he talks this way mostly about the adults, he evenaccuses his friends of phoniness. About Stradlater, his roommate at Pencey, he says, “He was at least a pretty friendly guy, Stradlater. It was partly a phony kind of friendly, but at least he alwayssaid hello to Ackley and all,” (Salinger 26). Holden’s obsession with phoniness seems to be the reason why he is so upset about the world. Because of this, he feels isolated and alone, “It was evendepressing out in the street. You couldn’t even hear any cars anymore. I got feeling so lonesome and rotten, I even felt like waking Ackley up,” (Salinger 50). The most powerful cause of Holden'sdepression is probably his feeling isolated from the rest of the world.
