“Parts of speech” are the basic types of words that English has. Most grammar books say that there are eight parts of speech: nouns, verbs,adjectives, adverbs, pronouns, conjunctions, prepositions and interjections
A noun is a word used to refer to people, animals, objects, substances, states, events andfeelings. Nouns can be a subject or an object of a verb, can be modified by an adjective and can take an article or determiner.

Verbs refer to an action or a state.

An adjective modifies a noun. Itdescribes the quality, state or action that a noun refers to.

Pronouns are small words that take the place of a noun. We can use a pronouninstead of a noun. If we didn't have pronouns, we would have to repeat a lot of nouns.

An adverb is a word that modifies the meaning of a Verb; anAdjective; another adverb; a Noun or Noun Phrase; Determiner; a Numeral; a Pronoun; or a Prepositional Phrase and can sometimes be used as a Complement of aPreposition.

An interjection is a word orshort phrase used in speech to gain attention, to exclaim, protest or command. Interjections can be used to show emotion such as surprise or shock.
