“You see a man walking down the street, his arms covered with tattoos, and what is your first thought? Criminal. Why do we find the need to stereotype? Is there really something wrong with tattoos?”
Let’s begin by defining what a tattoo is.
According to the MERRIAM-WEBSTER DICTIONARY, a tattoo is a permanent mark fixed upon the body by inserting pigment under the skin.
I, however, think oftattoos in a simpler way. They are body art that express who we are.
People get tattoos for all kinds of reasons, including honoring a lost love, symbolizing life-changing events, show dedication to your significant other, or for cultural reasons.
Throughout the speech, I will discuss 3 of the major concerns regarding tattoos: tattoos and religion, tattoos and jobs, and tattoos and aging.
Probablythe biggest reason why people do not agree with tattooing is religion. Many of you might argue they go against the word God, and I am about to explain why this is not true.
* The majority use Leviticus, a passage in the Bible, to try and prove that tattoos are forbidden by God. The most often quoted passage is Leviticus 19:28, which states “Ye shall not make any cuttings in your flesh for thedead, nor print any marks upon you: I am the LORD.”
* Upon first reading it, the argument seems pretty clear, but picking a single line out of an entire passage doesn’t tell the whole story. If you take the time to read the Leviticus passage, you’ll know that it is referring to pagan rituals.
* An article in SACREDINK.NET explains this very well.
* In this passage, God is telling hispeople from Israel to stay away from other religious practices. The forbidden practices include eating bloody meat, fortune telling, cutting your hair, marking your body for dead relatives, and prostitution. The context of the passage is not talking about modern-day tattoos, unless the tattoo is being used as part of a religious ceremony. The Bible simply says that God was warning his peopleabout some religious practices.
* People who use Leviticus to defend their anti-tattoo beliefs are hypocrites. They single out one law, while ignoring a big portion of the remaining verses in the passage.
* I found some of the ignored laws of Leviticus on BIBLEBABBLE.CURBJAW.COM, and they include: “Any person who curses his mother or father must be killed,” “If a man cheats on his wife, orvise versa, both must die,” “People who have flat noses or are blind cannot go to the altar of God,” and “Anyone who curses or blasphemes God should be stoned to death by the community.”
* Can anyone honestly say that these laws can still be applied in the 21st century? We are not allowed to go around stoning people to death for cursing their parents. Many of these laws are irrelevant to modernday lives. This is why it’s acceptable for people to trim their beards and cut their hair today even though it’s forbidden in Leviticus.

Leviticus 19:26-28 rebukes pagan, witchcraft, and heathen practices, and tattooing is one of them. It says that tattoos come from pagan origins.
The funny part of this argument is that many of the modern Christian holidays and practices ALSO have paganorigins. I’m talking about Christmas and Easter. Practicing these holidays SHOULD be considered one of the worst offenses when trying to avoid pagan rituals.
Another popular claim by people is that the body is a temple. Have you ever seen a temple? They usually look pretty decorated to me.
“But God made you perfect, and a tattoo is blasphemy!”
You know, God made me with terrible vision, and I’mconsidering permanently altering my eyes by undergoing laser surgery. Should I be condemned for this, too? After all, I’m making permanent changes to the perfect body I was born with.
People might get a tattoo for religion or cultural reasons.
Some people wear crosses around their necks, while others get them tattooed on their bodies.
For people who feel strongly about their religion, a tattoo is...
