What are the GMO?

* A genetically modified organism (GMO) is a living organism whose genetic material has been altered by humans. Depending on the legislation, the means of these changes are the selection methods of genetic engineering. In recent methods used to modify organisms by transgenesis, I mean, the insertion into the genome of one or more new genes. A"transgenic organism," a term which refers to organisms that contains genes in their genome "foreigners" is always a genetically modified organism, the reverse is not always true. Nowadays they have a greater presence in food from transgenic plants such as corn, barley or soybeans.

* Genetic engineering or recombinant DNA technology is the science of manipulating DNA sequences fromdirectly, allowing extraction of a given biological taxa and their inclusion in another, and the modification or elimination of these genes. This differs from the classical improvement, which is the science of DNA fragments introduced indirectly through directed crosses.

How is the method applied for making GMO?

* There are some steps to make GMO. In the process of cisgenesis, genes areartificially transferred between organisms that could be conventionally bred. In the process of transgenesis, genes from a different species are inserted. In nature it can occur when exogenous DNA penetrates the cell membrane for any reason. To do this artificially may require transferring genes as part of an attenuated virus genome or physically inserting the extra DNA into the nucleus of the intendedhost using a microsyringe. However, other methods exploit natural forms of gene transfer, such as the ability of lentiviruses to transfer genes to animal cells.

* In plants, the promotor must pertain to area that we want the gene to express, for example, if we want our transgenic genes express only in the rice and not the leaves.

Achievements in agriculture through the use of GMOGMO advocates say that the greatest achievements of these are: GMO advocates say that the greatest achievements of these are:

* GM foods can fight world hunger. The world population has reached an all-time high of over 6 and a half billion. Over 20% of these are suffering from poverty and hunger. That GM foods can stop hunger is one of the noblest motivations behind the development of GMfoods. GM foods supposedly are easier to grow and bring higher yields.

* GM crops are better. GM crops are designed to be sturdier and more robust than their non-modified cousins. They are meant to be resistant to drought, diseases, and pests.

* GM foods have been with us for hundreds of years. The wide variety of many plants that we see today came about through natural as well astraditional man-made plant cross-breeding that took thousands of years. There is 1000 different types of tomatoe, for example.

* GM foods can fight malnutrition. In a world suffering from malnutrition, GM foods can answer the need for more nutritious food. GM foods can fight malnutrition. In a world suffering from malnutrition, GM foods can answer the need for more nutritious food.

* GM foodsare good for the environment. GM foods translate into less use of pesticides, herbicides and fertilizers, and therefore less pollution.

* GM foods can help medicine. GM foods can be used in production of antibodies, biopharmaceuticals and edible vaccines in plants.

Problems and risks associated to the use of GMO

There are also people who believe that GMOs are bad and should not beconsumed. The opponents of GM foods may be scientists, environmentalists, and of course consumer groups. Those are the problems they expose:

* GM foods are for profit. According to its opponents, GM foods were created for profit and nothing else.

* GM foods are unregulated. The use of GM foods in the world is almost an unregulated free-for-all activity.

* GM foods can harm the...
