Edgar Allan Poe (1809 - 1849)

Best known for his poem "The Raven", the writer Edgar Allan Poe wrote compulsive horror stories and detective stories. He placed great emphasis on form and structurein his short stories and tense. His short story "The Murders in the Rue Morgue," published in 1841, is often called the first modern detective story.

Despite his skill as a writer, it is well knownthat Poe had a drinking problem, and his letters reveal that fought suicidal thoughts. The causes and circumstances surrounding his death at age 40 are unknown, but may have to do with heart failureor because of his addiction to drinking. Based on the interpretation of Poe's letters, Kay Redfield Jamison speculates that Poe was a manic depressive, a condition now called bipolar disorder. In herbook, she claims that Poe's creativity is like a spring in their states of mania. "From the sick mind comes a" cosmic "perspective that creative juice flow," he writes.

Edgar Allan Poe may haveseen a link between creativity and mental illness in itself. He wrote:

"Men have called me mad, but is not yet determined whether madness is or is not the loftiest intelligence, whether much that isglory, if all that is profound, does not spring from disease of thought, exalted ways of thinking about the general intellect. Those who dream by day are cognizant of many things which escape those whowill dream only by night. "

On October 3, 1849 in the city of Baltimore an election were held.
