Compare/Contrast Ideas of Latin American Leaders

The leaders of the 19th century set the bases ofwhat today is Latin America. The Cuban Jose Julian Marti Perez and the Argentinean Domingo Faustino Sarmiento are two of those leaders that contribute to the formation and development of the LatinAmerican governments and societies. Jose Julian Marti Perez was a revolutionary philosopher that belief in nationalism later he became the national hero of his country. Domingo Faustino Sarmiento was anactivist born in San Juan and he was the seventh President of his country in 1868. In this essay I will compare and contrast the work of Jose Julian Marti Perez called “Our America” and the work ofDomingo Faustino Sarmiento called “ Civilization and Barbarism”.

Jose Julian Marti Perez was the founder of the Cuban Revolutionary Party on 1892. During his life he fought for the lower classes inthe island and thought that they should be the ones that should have the political power. One of his strongest belief was nationalism because he belief in the ethic and values of the Cubans.

DomingoFaustino Sarmiento was member of the “Generation of 1837”. The group had a big influence on the Argentina of the time. During his time as an activist he fought against the gaucho who he said werebarbarians.

The two Latin American leaders approach to the society of their country in a different way, In the case of Jose Julian Marti Perez in his work “Our America” he talks of the people of theAmericas as one race which needs to fight against those ideas that the elites have influence by the Europeans. In the other hand Domingo Faustino Sarmiento does a separation between the races in theAmericas. In this work “ Civilization and Barbarism” he divides each races and informs the reader how do they live.
