The Legend of Añañuca

The Añañuca, is a typical flower of the northern region of our country, that grows specifically between Copiacó (Atacama Region) and thevalley of Quilimarí (Coquimbo Region). Few people know that the flower’s name comes from a tragic love story.

The legend says that in previous times, before theindependence of Chile, in the location of Mount Patria, lived añañuca, a beautiful young Indian girl whom all the men wanted to win over, but never could.

One day, amineworker in search of treasure arrived to the town. As soon as he met añañuca, love arose between them and they decided to get married.

The couple was happy forsome time, but one night, the young miner had a dream in which an elf revealed the place of the mine he was searching for so long. The next morning, without tellinganyone, not even his wife, he went to look for it.

Añañuca feeling bleak, waited and waited for him but days went by, weeks, months, and the young miner neverreturned.

It is said that this would have been a victim of the mirage of the plain, causing his disappearance and presumably, his death.

Añañuca soon died due tothe great pain of losing her loved one. She was buried in the middle of the valley by the towns people on a day of soft rain. The next day, the neighbors of the towncould see a surprising event. The place in which the young beauty was buried, was covered by an abundant layer of red flowers.

Since then, it is ensured that theyoung women turned into a flower as a gesture of love for her husband so that they could remain together forever. This was how the Añañuca flower was named.
