MEDELLÍNINCREASING AND MAINTAINING STUDENTS’ MOTIVATION TOWARDS LEARNING BASED ON THE ARCS MODEL OF MOTIVATIONAL INSTRUCTIONAL DESIGN
This paper includes a description of the project “Increasing and maintaining students’ motivation towards learning based on the ARCS model of motivational instructional design”, which was carried out from July to September 2009 at a private school, as arequirement to receive my Graduate Degree in the Teaching of English.
ABSTRACT
This paper reports the implementation of the Arcs Model of Motivational instructional design (Keller, 1987) in a group of first graders at a private school in Medellin (Colombia). The objective was to increase students’ motivation through the attention strategy proposed by such a model. During the research process, anaction plan was designed in order to draw and maintain students’ attention. In order to gather data for the study, several instruments were used: a journal, notes in the midst, and a written evaluation that students did at the end of the process. Data showed that the use of this model contributed to increase and maintain students’ attention in class.

This research project has given me the opportunity to investigate how I can increase...
