Ralph – he is the protagonist and is described as a handsome fair-haired boy of about twelve years old, son of a naval officer, he is athletic and is the most charismatic of the group. He isdescribed as being built like a boxer, and is initially chosen for chief, who makes it his job to lay down rules and try to organize a society, he tries to remain rational and fair. Ralph is the primaryrepresentative of order, civilization, and productive leadership in the novel. While most of the other boys initially are concerned with playing, having fun, and avoiding work, Ralph sets about buildinghuts and thinking of ways to maximize their chances of being rescued. For this reason, Ralph’s power and influence over the other boys is secure at the beginning of the novel. However, as the groupgradually succumbs to savage instincts over the course of the novel Ralph’s position declines precipitously while Jack’s rises. He maintains a conflict with Jack throughout the entire novel, attempting tokeep order whereas Jack isn’t concerned with it. Ralph and Piggy together represent the struggle for order and democracy. Ralph and Piggy agree with each other’s ideas, but Ralph doesn’t realize howimportant Piggy really is to him until the very end of the novel.
Ralph is also considered as calm and rational with sound judgment and a strong moral sensibility and has a strong commitment tojustice, equality and civilization, and his main wish is to be rescued and returned to the society of adults. In a sense, this strength gives Ralph a moral victory at the end of the novel. In the earlierparts of the novel, Ralph is unable to understand why the other boys would give in to base instincts of bloodlust and barbarism. The sight of the hunters chanting and dancing is baffling anddistasteful to him. As the novel progresses, however, Ralph comes to understand that savagery exist within all the boys.
