In an ancient city called Pompeii, on the coast of Italy a natural disaster occurred during A.D. 79. It was a volcanic eruption that destroyed the city but the ashes of thisvolcano left the remains very preserved. This helped archeologist discover the beautiful and ancient city of Pompeii with its victims nearly intact.
It all started a warm yet beautiful day inPompeii. Everything was normal until people started to hear a roaring sound coming from Mount Vesuvius. People could not believe the volcano was going to erupt since it had been inactive for three hundredyears.
Suddenly Mount Vesuvius erupted covering the entire city with ashes. “People died buried by ashes, choked by the smoke or simply burned by the lava that kept coming out of the volcano”,(www.news.bbc.co.uk). “Pompeii was not the only city suffering from the eruption, a nearby town called Herculaneum was also covered in ashes”, (). Everyone screamed for the lives as the lava burned themalive. Some survived, others just weren’t so lucky.
Centuries later, all of the information we had about what had happened was a letter written by a witness called Pliny the Younger who saw theeruption from his uncle’s house in a island nearby. Pliny’s uncle was a commander of a Roman fleet and after the eruption he went to Pompeii with his troops to save the people that had survived the disaster.When they were arriving the boiling lava wouldn’t let them reach the island so they stayed in a nearby town to begin the rescue mission in the morning. Little they knew the toxic smoke had reachedthem by dawn. They didn’t survive. His desire of saving all the survivors killed him and because of that his nephew decided to let the world know his uncle was in fact a hero.
