Función Suma
Si f(x) y g(x) son dos funciones, entonces la función suma esta dada por
( f + g ) ( x ) = f (x) + g (x)
Ejemplo 1 Si f (x) = 2x + 1 y h (x) = |x| entonces:
( h + f )(x) = h (x) + f (x) = |x| + 2x + 1
( h + f )(2) = h (2) + f (2) = |2| + 2 ( 2 ) + 1= 7
Función Diferencia
Si f(x) y g(x) son dosfunciones, entonces la función diferencia esta dada por
( f - g ) ( x ) = f (x) - g (x)
Ejemplo 2 Si f (x) = 2x + 1, g (x) = x2 entonces:
( f - g )( x ) = f (x) - g (x) = 2x + 1 - x2 = 1 + 2x - x2
( f - g )(- 1) = f (- 1) - g (- 1) = 2 ( -1) + 1 - ( -1)2 = -2 + 1 - 1 = - 2
Función Producto
Si f(x) y g(x) son dos funciones, entonces la función producto estadada por
( f g ) ( x ) = f (x) g (x)
Ejemplo 3 Si g (x) = x2 y h (x) = x - 2 entonces:
( h • g )(x) = h (x) • g (x) = ( x - 2 ) x2 = x3 – 2x2
( h • g )(5) = h (5) • g (5) = ( 5 - 2 ) ( 5 )2 = 3 (25) = 75

La función opuesta: −f(x).

División de funciones
(f / g)(x) = f(x) / g(x)

Suma de funciones
Sean f y g dos funciones realesde variable real definidas en un mismo intervalo. Se llama suma de ambas funciones, y se representa por f + g, a la función definida por
Resta de funciones
Del mismo modo que se ha definido la suma de funciones, se define la resta de dos funciones reales de variable real f y g, como la función

Producto de funciones
Sean f y g dos funciones reales de variable real, y definidas en un mismo intervalo. Se llama función producto de f y g a la función definida por
Cociente de funciones
Dadas dos funciones reales de variable real, f y g, y definidas enun mismo intervalo, se llama función cociente de f y g a la función definida por

Producto de un número por una función
Dado un número real a y una función f, el producto del número por la función es la función definida por

Sean las funciones f(x) = 3x + 1, y g(x) = 2x - 4.
Definir la función f + g y calcular las imágenes de los números 2, -3 y 1/5.
Resolución:
La función f + g se define como
(f + g) (x) = f(x) + g(x) = x + 1 + 2x - 4 = 5x - 3.
(f + g) (2) = 5 · 2 - 3 = 7
(f + g) (-3) = 5(-3) - 3 = -18
(f + g) (1/5) = 5 · 1/5 - 3 = -2
