El tiempo Pasado Continuo también se le puede llamar Pasado Progresivo.

La estructura de una oración en pasado continuo o pasado progresivo, está formada de la siguiente manera:

El pasado continuo o progresivo tiene los siguientes usos: “The Past Continuous expresses a past activity that has duration.” (Soars 2001, p.142) Expresa una actividad que sucedió en el pasado y que tiene duración. Ejemplos (Examples):
I met her while I was living in Guadalajara. Yo la conocí mientras estaba viviendo en Guadalajara. You were working last night. Ustedes estaban trabajandola noche de ayer.
“The activity began before the action expresses by the Simple Past”, (Soars 2001, p.142). La acción comenzó antes que la acción expresada por el Pasado Simple, es decir, muchas veces al comunicar vamos a combinar el pasado simple y el continuo.

El pasado continuo comunica acciones o detalles que estaban sucediendo, estaban en progreso, o aun no terminaban. Ejemplos(Examples):
She was baking a cake when we arrived. Ella estaba horneando un pastel cuando nosotros llegamos.
When I found Patricio he was eating breakfast. Cuando yo encontré a Patricio, él estaba comiendo su desayuno.
“The past continuous expresses an activity in progress before, and probably after , a time in the past. (Soars 2001, p.142). El pasado continuo expresa una actividad queinicio antes y probablemente continuó por un tiempo más durante el pasado. Ejemplos (Examples): When she woke up this morning, the baby was crying. Cuando ella despertó esta mañana, el bebé estaba llorando (el bebé siguió llorando por más tiempo).
When the student finished his homework, his mother was washing the clothes. Cuando el estudiante terminó su tarea, su mamá estaba lavando la ropa (lamamá siguió lavando por un tiempo más).
