World History to A.D. 1500
Journey Across Time
 
The goal of the eighth grade social studies curriculum team is to have the students gain a better understanding of the various world cultures. This will be accomplished by examining the development of each culture from its beginning. Students will also be provided with tools with which to become life long learners. This will include the use ofprimary sources, literature, research, discussion and simulation. Map and globe skills, graphic organizers, critical thinking and cooperative learning activities and the use of technology will be incorporated into the units.

1st Nine Weeks: Chapters 1, 2, 3, 6, 7
2nd Nine Weeks: Chapters4, 5, 8, 9
3rd Nine Weeks: Chapters 9, 10, 15, 17
4th Nine Weeks: Chapters 11, 12, 13, 14, 16

Unit 1: (Beginnings- The Rise of Civilizations)
Essential Questions:
• What is history?
• How do we know what we know?
• How did the way of life for humans change over time?
• What makes a civilization?
Objectives:
1. TLW explain how artifacts and other archaeologicalfindings provide evidence of the nature and movement of prehistoric groups of people.
2. TLW identify the birth of Christ as the basis of the Gregorian calendar used in the United States since its beginning and in most countries of the world today, signified by B.C. and A.D.
3. TLW use vocabulary terms other than B.C. and A.D. to describe time.
4. TLW identify the founding of Rome as thebasis of the calendar established by Julius Caesar, which was used in early Western civilization for over a thousand years.
5. TLW identify terms used to describe characteristics of early societies and family structures.
6. TLW analyze characteristics of early civilizations in respect to technology, division of labor, government, calendar, and writings.
7. TLW assess how humans adjust tothe climate and terrain where they live.
8. TLW identify how weather and geography force people to change.
9. TLW describe the positive and negative changes people have made to their environment.
10. TLW compare and contrast the different ways cultures interact through trade, migration, and conquest.

Unit 2: (Early River Valley Civilizations)
Essential Questions:
• What makesa civilization?
• How does geographical location impact the beliefs and values of a people?
Objectives:
1. TLW compare significant features of civilizations that developed in the Tigris-Euphrates, Nile, Indus, and Huang He River valleys.
2. TLW identify on a map locations of cultural hearths of early civilizations.
3. TLW identify geographical influences on the development ofcivilizations and cultures.
4. TLW identify the effect of the monsoons on India.
5. TLW identify landforms and climate regions of China.
6. TLW compare the development of early world religions, philosophies, and their key tenets.
7. TLW identify cultural contributions of early world religions and philosophies.
8. TLW trace the beginnings of organized government.
9. TLW assesshow humans adjust to the climate and terrain where they live.
10. TLW identify how weather and geography force people to change.
11. TLW describe the positive and negative changes people have made to their environment.
12. TLW compare and contrast the different ways cultures interact through trade, migration, and conquest.
13. TLW discover and discuss the blending of ideas betweendifferent cultures.

Unit 3: (Ancient Egypt)
Essential Questions:
• What role does religion play on society?
• What factors lead to a society’s stability?
• How does a leader maintain power and influence over a people?
Objectives:
1. TLW compare significant features of civilizations that developed in the Tigris-Euphrates, Nile, Indus, and Huang He River valleys.
