THE HIDROPONICS

INTRODUCTION

In its essence, it is the science of growing plants without soil, although now most hydroponic systems use a variety of inert material such as gravel, perlite, etc. as a porous plant support. Hydroponic growing has become a major player because of its ability to be used where the ground or climate in the region can't normally support the growing of plant life. This can be a desert or even a space station, but hydroponic technology is used mainly by greenhouses and home hobbyists as a way of quickly raising plants to maturity. Because of hydroponics, the home hobbyist is now able to grow crops of the highest quality many times a year in a relatively small area.
Hydroponics is proved to have several advantages over soil gardening. The growth rate on ahydroponic plant is 30-50 percent faster than a soil plant, grown under the same conditions. The yield of the plant is also greater. Scientist believes that there are several reasons for the drastic differences between hydroponic and soil plants. The extra oxygen in the hydroponic growing mediums helps to stimulate root growth. Plants with ample oxygen in the root system also absorb nutrientsfaster. The nutrients in a hydroponic system are mixed with the water and sent directly to the root system. The plant does not have to search in the soil for the nutrients that it requires. Those nutrients are being delivered to the plant several times per day. The hydroponic plant requires very little energy to find and break down food. The plant then uses this saved energy to grow faster and toproduce more fruit. Hydroponic plants also have fewer problems with bug infestations, funguses and disease.

HYDROPONICS

Hydroponics is a method of growing plants in mineral nutrient solutions, in water, without soil. Terrestrial plants can be grown with their roots in the mineral nutrient solution only or in an inert medium such as perlite, gravel, rock wool, or coconut shell.
Researchersdiscovered in the 19th century that plants absorb essential nutrients such as inorganic mineral ions in the water. Under natural conditions, soil acts as a mineral nutrient reservoir but the soil is not essential for plant growth. When the mineral nutrients in the soil dissolves in water, plant roots are able to absorb them. When the required mineral nutrients enter the water supply of an artificialplant, soil is no longer necessary for the plant to thrive. Almost any terrestrial plant will grow with hydroponics. Hydroponics is also a standard technique in biology research and teaching.

Advantage

Some of the reasons that hydroponics is being adapted throughout the world for food production are:
it does not need soil
The water stays in the system and can be reused thus reducing watercosts
You can control the levels of nutrition in full-hence, lower costs of nutrition
No contamination of nutrition is released into the environment due to the control system
Stable and high performance
Pests and diseases are easier to remove than in the soil due to the mobility of container
Today, hydroponics is an established branch of agronomy. Progress has been rapid, and results achievedin various countries have shown to be eminently practical, and has very significant advantages over conventional methods of horticulture. The two main advantages of the soil less cultivation of plants are, first, much higher yields, and secondly, hydroponics can be used in places where the soil agriculture or gardening is not possible.

Disadvantages

Hydroponics (presence of fertilizers andhigh humidity) to create an environment that stimulates the disadvantage is growth. Another attacks salmonella pathogens including moisture was due to Verticillium wilt caused by high humidity levels associated with hydroponics and excess water land based plants. In addition, many hydroponic plants require fertilizers and containment systems.
