The density of an object is a measurement of how closely its matter is a packet together density includes an object´s mass, or weight, and its volume, or the amount ofspace it takes up. If two objects weigh the same but one takes up less space, the smaller one has greater density. Understanding density will help explain other things, likewhy some objects float while other objects sink.
Water has a density of 1 gram per milliliter (g7ml). If a material has a density greater than one, such as solid aluminum(2.7 g7ml) or iron (7.9 g/ml),it will sink in water.
Which weighs more: one pound of feathers or one pound of iron? This is actually A TRICK question; a pound is a pound,so they would weight the same. Now try this one: which takes up more space? You might say they take up the same amount of space, because they are both one pound. Actually, the pound of feathers would take up more space, or volume, than the pound of iron. This is because the iron has a greater density.
These two gold bars have the samedensity. They have the same mass. The mass of each bar takes up the same amount of space they have the same volume.

These two bars have the same volume. But the gold bar has alot more mass. Because the gold bar packs more mass into the same volume, it has a greater density. Gold has a greater density than chocolate.

Confuse about thedifference between mass and volume? Remember this: a scale is used to measure mass, and a graduated cylinder is used to measure volume.

Adding salt to water increases itsdensity. Some materials that might sink in freshwater can float in salt water. This is why many people find it easier to float in the ocean, the Great Salt Lake, or the dead sea.
