RESUMEN

ABSTRACT

Esta serie de dos artículos no pretende ser una revisión exhaustiva del origen del maíz, su aprovechamiento, su mejoramiento
genético y mucho menos de su economía. En la primera parte se
hace una revisión muy somera del origen del maíz, más que nada
parareconocer el trabajo de dos profesores mexicanos sobre el
origen de esta planta del teocintle. Además, se hace hincapié en
la creciente y reciente actividad de la colección de germoplasma
del maíz aún en lugares en donde no existe una diversidad tan
amplia, como el noroeste de México. Se hace también un repaso
de las variedades criollas mejoradas en nuestro país con objeto
de fundamentarque el campesino de bajos recursos tendrá acceso al germoplasma mejorado con las variedades de polinización
libre y las variedades sintéticas. De un total de 130 poblaciones
de ese tipo catalogadas en México por el INIFAP (Instituto Nacional de Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícilas y Pecuarias), sólo
dos decenas se muestran aquí con algunas de sus características
sobresalientes, más 55poblaciones mejoradas por las universidades públicas, prácticamente sólo enunciadas. El objetivo, aunque

This series of two articles does not attempt to be an exhaustive
review of the origin of corn, its use, its genetic improvement or,
even less, its economy. In the first part, a very shallow review
about the origin of corn is made, mainly to recognize the work of
two Mexican professors on theorigin of this plant from teocintle.
In addition, it is stressed the growing and recent activity in corn
germplasm collection, even in places where there is not such a
wide diversity like the Northwest of México. A review is also
made of the Creole varieties improved in our country with the
goal of arguing in favor of peasants of low means having access to
improved germplasm with varieties offree pollination and
synthetic varieties. Out of a total of 130 populations of this type
catalogued in México by the INIFAP (Instituto Nacional de
Investigaciones Forestales, Agrícilas y Pecuarias), only two dozens
are shown here with some of their outstanding characteristics,
plus 55 populations improved by public universities, which are
virtually only mentioned. The objective, althoughsomewhat
