Violence among Genders

For far too long men have been portrayed as the only perpetrators of domestic violence against women and most people have believed in that theory (Anderson, 2007). Nowadays, society is awakening to the fact that domestic violence is a problem that goes beyond gender stereotypes. A variety of studies that have been conducted since 1975 have shown that men and women areequally likely to commit and suffer abuse (Bittner, 2008). But is still in question the position of the abused man in society. The men have been the subject of ridicule and discrimination by those who believe that a man cannot be beaten or abused by a woman. Stigma and social prejudice together with the lack of support from society and the unconsciousness have led to the inhibition of male victimsof domestic violence. That is why over the years the reported cases of abuse against women, exceed the cases of violence against man.
First of all the abused man exists; is not a new concept, not are new words, it is a reality, just as the mistreatment against women; doesn't exist differences between both. The society makes men think that Law 54 “Puerto Rico’s Domestic Violence Prevention andIntervention” only protects women, but not so. Men also have rights, as the law says “Anyone who is a victim of domestic violence or conduct constituting the crime within the context of a relationship, may file for protection (2004). But nobody can deny that there still discrimination in this respect against men. According to Lexjuris (2009) aproximately 7 laws which directly or indirectly attempto prevent domestic violence; in only one man is acknowledge as an indirect victim of violence. Unlike women, since all laws establishes them as the protected, because there are more reported cases of battered women, the laws tend to protect more them; thus calling into question the credibility of such law. A good example of this is, when people hear the term Law 54, they
think in batteredwomen. But when we see or hear that the abused or injured was the man people tend to think that she did it in self defense. At times like these we see that society has control over the way in which laws are implemented. If the society wants to create an equitable view of men and women, they should start doing so by laws, because some are made by favoring a few, and that is which drives people to livein a society where equality rights do not exists. Actually this has led that men do not dare to denounce his spouse; for the rejection of society, or just the fear of the consequences this may bring.
Studies show that many of the reasosn why a man and a woman remain in an abusive relationship are the same. Like women, men also fear they will nos beleived them if they report the abuse in thecase of men, sociaty has women as the wounded, and in the case of the women , the “power” that men has in society. Death treats by the perpretrator, fear of loneliness or lack of resources, the use of childrne to retain, are some of many reasons leading to both to stay in abusive relationships. The abuse againts men, occurs for years, but is new to society, which still does not see the situationfrom another perspective, what causes the misunderstanding of people and result of this, the creation of prejudices. Its have made men ask these questions “What will people think?” “Do not want anyone making fun of me”, “Nobody will believe me”. Certainly the most important reason why man does not report violence is for social stigmas. There are reasons for both to not want to report abuse, butmen fell embarrassed, you know, by being abused by their wives, because people will even laugh at them over it or ridicule them, so sometimes they just do not want to admit that this is going on (Capaldi, 2003). Another reason is the stereotypes created by society, which often prevents men can report the abuse. Unlike women, they have every right to claim when they want, and even make false...
