Canto 17

Fight Erupts body of Patroclus. Euphorbus tries to take the armor, but is killed by Menelaus. Hector sees Euphorbus falls and comes to her aid. Menelaus seeks help from Ajax the Great, who forces Hector to back down, preventing the body of Patroclus is profaned. However, the armor is taken away and Hector manages to put it. Glaucus accuses Hector for leaving behind the body of Patroclus. Hector reenters the fray, and promises to give half of the spoils of war if someone brings the body of Patroclus.

            Ajax and Menelaus summon more Achaeans to help them. Aeneas, invigorated by Apollo, brings together men who fled to return to the fight, but after much effort are still unable to take the corpse.

            Athena, disguised as Phoenix, gives new strength to Menelaus, while Apollo, disguised as a Trojan, gives encouragement to Hector. Menelaus sends Antilochus to call Achilles, who does not know of the death of Patroclus. Zeus gives enough time for Menelaus and Meriones take away the body of Patroclus.
