When it comes to assessing the logistics environment of different countries, one cannot find more of a contrast that Switzerland and Chad. Thesedifferences serve to illustrate the role of geography, infrastructure and institutions.
Chad is landlocked in the middle of Africa surrounded by countries that also suffer from poor transportation,unstable governments and little money. With 500,000 square miles of land, it only has 200 miles of all season roads. Their per-capita GDP is $600, one of the poorest in Africa, and thus the world.Ironically, it is rich in minerals such as oil, uranium, gold and diamonds and has 50 million acres of arable land. Switzerland, on the other hand, has almost all of the resources needed for world-class logistics, though they do face some special challenges. Geographically, they arelandlocked, like Chad. Instead of being surrounded by endless desert, Switzerland is crossed with high mountains. On the positive side, their infrastructure is probably the best in the world. They have anextensive and well-maintained network of roads, railroads, airports, and other infrastructure. In fact, they have overcome the barrier of the Alps with some of the most dramatic tunnels in the world,and the world's steepest railroad." Their institutions include all the services necessary for trade and commerce, including the famous Swiss banks.
