EMOTIONAL INTELLIGENCE AND ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT: AN STUDY IN CHAÑARAL’S PROVINCE STUDENTS

Resumen

Esta investigación se dirigió a verificar el grado decorrelación existente entre el nivel de Inteligencia Emocional Percibida (IEP) y el Rendimiento Académico (RA) de los alumnos de Cuarto Año de Enseñanza Media Científico-humanista de los liceos de la provincia de Chañaral en la Región de Atacama (Chile) durante 2007.
La variable de IE intrapersonal fue medida a través del inventario de autoinforme TMMS-24 sobre rasgos de metaconocimiento deestados emocionales, basado en el Trait Meta-Mood Scale del grupo de investigación de Salovey y Mayer, y adaptado al español, por el Laboratorio de Emociones de la Universidad de Málaga, dirigido por el Dr. Pablo Fernández-Berrocal.
El Rendimiento Académico (RA) se midió a través del promedio general de calificaciones anuales, obtenido tanto por los estudiantes promovidos a cuarto medio como por losrepitientes del nivel en 2006, conforme a la escala de calificación nacional que va de 1,0 a 7,0.
La investigación consideró sólo a los alumnos que cursaban cuarto año medio, debido a que por ser el nivel terminal de la enseñanza obligatoria y formal, representaban la mejor población para medir el logro de las competencias académicas y “afectivas” mínimas de egreso, que el sistema educativochileno se propone alcanzar. Además, se analizó sólo la realidad de los estudiantes pertenecientes a la Enseñanza Humanista-Científica descartando a aquellos del mismo nivel que cursaban estudios en la Educación Técnico-Profesional o en jornada nocturna de adultos, por poseer un currículo distinto y académicamente menos extenso.

Abstract
This research went to check the degree of the existing correlation between the level of Emotional Intelligence Perceived (IEP) and the Academic Achievement (RA) of students in the fourth grade of scientific and humanistic high school Education of the secondary schools in the province of Chañaral in Atacama's Region (Chile) in 2007.
The variable Emotional Intelligence wasmeasured through the inventory TMMS-24 on features of self-knowledge of emotional conditions based on the Trait Meta-Mood Scale of the research group of Salovey and Mayer, and adapted to the Spanish language for the Laboratory of Emotions of the University of Malaga team, directed by Pablo Fernández-Berrocal.
The academic achievement was measured up using the general average of annualqualifications, obtained both by the promoted students of fourth grade and by the reproved of the level in 2006, in conformity with the scale of national qualification that goes from 1,0 to 7,0.
The research considered only those students who were studying in the Fourth Grade Average Year, due to the fact that for being a terminal level of the compulsory and formal education, they represented the bestpopulation to measure the achievement of the minimal academic and "affective" minims competences of graduation, that the educational chilean system proposes to reach. In addition, there was analyzed only the reality of the students belonging to the Humanistic and scientific Education rejecting those of the same level but of Technician - professional education curriculum or those who were dealingstudies in the adult education, because of their different and less extensive curriculum.
