A seven- day reflection on Yama and a Niyama: Ahiṃsā & Tapas

Yamas and Niyamas: They deal with our social attitude and lifestyle, how we interact with other people and the environment, and how we deal with our problems. ( Desikachar 97)

The Yamas
Yama can mean “discipline” or “ restraint” and is betterto understand it as “attitude” or “ behaviour” (Desikachar 98), also means restraint or abstention is a Social Discipline (Iyengar 19, *CP 133)

Ahiṃsā: Ahiṃsā is more tan just lack of violence.(Desikachar 98), Violence is lack of Love, without enmity no act of violence can occur. Only love can unite society and make it cohesive. (Iyengar 20, *CP 134)

-It means to be a person who transmitsomething good (kindness, friendliness, and thoughtful consideration of other people and things) for yourself and for your environment.

When we developed the yamas using the ahimsa (kindness and consideration) we develop the more pleasant and friendly feelings our very presence engenders in others.

Ahiṃsā:
I choose Ahimsa as my Yama because I’m really into attitude and behaviour I reallybelieve that when you have a good or bad attitude is really notorious in our behaviour, also when you develop the ahimsa you transmit kindness and we need to behave with consideration towards others and this would work for people who don’t have consideration for others than themselves they need to develop this Yama in their life, and they would change totally to a way that people would feel yourfriendly presence and would want to be like you without you even noticing it. I choose this one because people that transmit confidence.

The Niyamas
They represent far more than an attitude, are more intimate and personal. They refer to the attitude we adopt toward ourselves.(Desikachar 100) Rules of conduct towards oneself consist of certain disciplines which are both physical and mental. (Iyengar23, *CP 135)

Tapas: Austerity or penance is the conquest of all desires or sensual pleasures by practising purity in thought, speech, and action. (Iyengar 24,*CP 136)

-They refer to being healthy and to have a really healthy and fit body, to cleanse it. To check what you eat and what you don’t eat. To discipline the body. Eating when we are not hungry is not a tapa. Is a way of makingyourself confortable with your own body and life.

When we developed niyamas using Tapas (Keep the body in shape) we develop more self control and we transmit a healthy figure and a healthy environment.

Tapas:
I choose Tapas as my Niyama because I’m really into being healthy and being happy with what you eat and how you are, and I really relate my self with this Tapa because we are always temptedto the non healthy things and they are always the most delicious thing but not always the most healthy that’s way using this niyama makes you mentally stronger and healthier
People is always struggling about this niyama because you need to be really self controlled and mentally strong to approach it. Eat well is one of the most important thing in this niyama, there is a very famous quote thatsays
“You are what you eat”. I choose this one because is our choice to be healthy and to stay strong and transmit you healthiness towards others.

Seven days using Yamas (Ahiṃsā) and Niyamas (Tapas)

DAY 1:
Monday 12 November 2012:
I woke up with a positive mindset and went to bath, I put a confortable outfit, and I put tapas to work by eating a healthy breakfast, breakfast helps youprevent being dizzy or tired and you can be in a really bad mood during the day, I got on the bus to go to school, I apply ahimsa in a way that conveyed peace because I had a smile on my face and that made me feel good about myself and towards others, I arrive to school and I went to my first class also with a positive attitude because that was my challenge of the day to be positive and convey...
