Competency - Based Job Analysis (pag 127)

Unlike the traditional task based approach to analyzing jobs, the competency approach considers how knowledge and skills are used. Competencies areindividual capabilities that can be linked to performance by individual sor teams.
The concept of competencies varies widely from organization to organization. The term technical competencies is oftenused to refer to specific knowledge and skills of employees. For example, the following have been identified as behavioral competencies:

* Customer Focus
* Team Orientation
* TechnicalExpertise
* Results Orientation
* Communication effectiveness
* Leadership
* Conflict Resolution
* Innovation
* Adaptability
* Decisiveness

The competency approachattempts to identify the competencies have been identified as driving employee performance. For instance, many supervisors talk about employees´attitedes, but they have difficulty, identifyingexactly what they mean by attitude. A variety of methodologies are used to help supervisors articulate examples of competencies and how those factors affect performance.
Unlike the traditional task basedjob analysis, one purpose of the competency approach is to influence individual and organizational behaviors in the future. The competency approach may be more broadly focused on behaviors, ratherthan justo n task, duties, and responsabilities. Some of the more comprehensive competency based job analysis components may extensively include knowledge, skills, abilities, and personalitycharacteristics.
