The Effect of Age on Environmental Sound Perception in 17 to 58 Months Old Children Summary The aim of this study was to determine the effect of age on environmental sound perception in Mexican children. Fifty five children divided into four age groups (17-23 months, 24-35 months, 36-47 months and 48-58 months) participated in thestudy. No significant sociodemographic differences were found between groups reported by their mother through a questionnaire of the child’s sociodemographic background. We used a specifically designed 10 items task that pair environmental sound-sound source/referent. We found an internal consistency of the task using Cronbach alpha (0.8207). In general, the means showed a marked progression withage. Differences between adjacent groups were observed only among the group of 48-58 months old and 36-47 months old. Difference in items recognition was also evident since some of them were recognized by the majority of children while others, only by older children. The age effect size on the total of the items that compose the task was large (>0.50); on car and train items we found a medium...
