What Is a Community?
“Gay” is a community where its members are considered different and controversial. Since its revelation or, asthey say, “out of the closet,” they have had a constant struggle against the world and throughout time have been established. Its perseverance has been recognized and accepted in many other communities.Making their interests, needs, and values are share and their tension or differences work against the cohesion of this community.
This group is considered a community because they have an ideal forwhich they fight and defend. Although they are anywhere, they always have a place in the cities where their concentration is defined and established and everybody is recognized as a gay town. Theyhave common characteristic in most cases, such as hair styles, types of clothes and colors, manners of speaking, and even their gestures. Also, they try to hold together because although in the modernworld they have acceptance of what people say, they feel more comfortable, safe and strong to continue to fight for their rights.
One of the community’s principal interests is being recognized likenormal couples and seeing who can play a normal life and form a home with kids. They need our society to give to them rights, such as social security, Medicare and benefits to couples like withheterosexual couples. Also, the gay community wants people to respect their condition and value the way that love people of the same sex because it’s not easy being part of a society with a large number ofpeople against their preferences.
Over time, the gay community has had to fight against communities that do not want to accept them, such as churches, schools and the armed forces who think thatbeing gay is a mental disorder or, in the case of churches, possessed by a demon and considered a risk to society.
