COURSE DESCRIPTION:

A survey of the history of the world from the earliest civilizations of Mesopotamia and Egypt to the rise of capitalism and the beginnings of European imperialism before 1648

COURSE DESIGN:

The course is designed to engage students in such a manner to encourage the students to internalize contentand concepts through critical thinking, applying concepts through written expression, and self-evaluation. To achieve these goals the course procedure is as follows:

1. Students will be engaged in three (3) hours of instruction with one (1) hour reserved for hands-on laboratory activities.

a. Activities will include, but not limited to: small group and individual instruction anddiscussion; application of concepts, University and Community activities.

2. Web-CT will be used as a secondary delivery system for:

a. Course objectives, lecture notes, discussion questions, group activities, quizzes, assessments, and after-class communication.

3. Students will complete a three (3) to five (5) page research essay with an annotated bibliography and referencepage.

4. Students will maintain a week summary report of learning and self-evaluation.

5. All student work will be maintained electronically through the use of a “flash-drive” that will be periodically graded.

6. Service Learning will be introduced in conjunction with University College and Student Life to be completed as a Module in History of Civilization 102.

STRATEGIESAND PROCEDURES:

1. Lecture notes and chapter outlines will be posted (on-line) prior to each scheduled class:
a. Discuss goals and objectives of each section of the module stressing chapter themes and important concepts.
2. Class will be divided into groups of Five (5) to Seven (7) students:
a. Each group will consist of a Group Leader and a Group Recorder. The GroupLeader will be responsible for group organization and assignment of tasks, and discussion. The group recorder will be responsible for noting the participation of group members and preparing final reports to share with the class.
i. The Recorder will submit their final report to all students via Web-CT.
ii. Each group will discuss their report with the entire class andanswer questions.
b. Groups will be monitored by the Instructor and Assistants during scheduled Lab times.
c. This procedure will be repeated for each chapter and discussion questions contained within the module:
d. Groups will be re-configured after each section;
e. Attention will be paid to:
i. Understanding content and concepts;ii. Writing; and structure
iii. Critical Thinking
f. The class will evaluate learning outcomes.








MODULE I:

“EARLY HUMAN EXPERIENCES AND THE DEVELOPMENT OF EARLY CIVILIZATIONS TO 500 B.C.E.”

GOALS AND OBJECTIVES:

1. Students will be able to:

a. Explain the theory of Evolution and the associated studies that support orrefute that theory;

b. List the characteristics of a Civilization;

c. Discuss the development of technologies that impacted the spread of civilization globally;

d. Compare the differences and similarities of early world cultures.
