El general Bolívar es delgado, y algo menos de una regular estatura. 
Viste bien, y tiene un modo de andar y presentarse franco y militar. Es ginete muy fuerte y atrevido, y capaz de resistir grandes fatigas. Sus 
maneras son buenas y su aire sin afectacion, pero que no predispone 
mucho á su favor. Se dice que en su juventud fué de buena figura; pero 
actualmente es de rostro pálido, pelo negro con canas, ojos negros y 
penetrantes; pero generalmente inclinados á tierra ó de lado cuando

expresion de su semblante es cautelosa, triste....

Su carácter, viciado por la adulacion, es arrogante y caprichoso.... Su 
imaginacion y su persona son de una actividad maravillosa.... Su voz es 
gruesa y áspera; pero habla elocuentemente en casi todas materias....

PROLOGO Ardua empresa es la de escribir la biografia de los hombres célebres 
contemporáneos. En todo tiempo, aquel que por sus méritos ha llegado á 
colocarse sobre el nivel de las gentes, siempre se ha visto atacado por 
la mordacidad de sus émulos y por muchos á quienes sus actos no podian 
menos de herir, ora en sus intereses, ora en sus familias. ¿Que resolucion se ha llevado á cabo sin lastimar intereses creados, sin 
sembrar la devastacion y la muerte por todas partes? 
Por mas que el hombre de que vamos á ocuparnos haya derramado en su 
camino la sangre de sus hermanos, no por eso dejará de ser el 
_Libertador_ de un pueblo que gemia bajo el yugo de la opresion.
