SWIMMING Olympics
history
Swimming has been known since prehistoric times, and the first records of swimming dates back to the paintings of the Stone Age 7,000 years ago. Written references dateback to 2000 B.C. Some of the earliest references include the Epic of Gilgamesh, the Iliad, the Odyssey, the Bible (Ezekiel 47:5, Acts 27:42, Isaiah 25:11), Beowulf, and other sagas. In 1538, NikolausWynmann, a German professor of languages, wrote the first book of swimming, swimmer or a dialogue about the art of swimming ("ein oder Der Schwimmer Zweigespräch Schwimmkunst über die"). Competitiveswimming in Europe started around 1800, mostly with the technique of the breaststroke. In 1873, John Arthur Trudgen introduced trudgen style to Western swimming competitions, after copying the frontcrawl used by Native Americans. Because British indifference to splashing, Trudgen employed a scissor kick instead of the front crawl kick.
International competitions have been sponsored in Europe byamateur clubs to swimming since the late nineteenth century. However, until the 1920s, these competitions were not defined on a stable and regular. Britain had created some competitions between membernations of the British Empire before 1910. The first official games of the British Empire, where swimming was an important component, were held in Canada in 1930. Swimming now plays a role in severalother international competitions, the most prominent being the Pan American Games and the Asian and Mediterranean competitions.
1 - Swimming: 727 athletes, competing both individually and in teams ina total of 16 specific tests for each mode, freestyle, backstroke, breaststroke, butterfly, individual medley, free relay single relay.
2 - Synchronized Swimming: 104 athletes, only female competingfor 4 days in individual and team events.
