NUTRITION OF LIVING ORGANISM

HETEROTROPHS
Heterotrophs, like this eagle, feed off of other forms of life. Heterotrophs are the consumers of the food chain.

This process of producing biological energy is different from that of autotrophs who produce their own food using energy from the Sun.

AN EAGLE IS AN EXAMPLE OF A HETEROTROPH. ALL
ANIMALS ARE HETEROTROPHS. 

The term heterotroph can refer to single or multicelled organisms. Many bacteria as well as all fungi and animals are heterotrophs.

KINGDOM FUNGI

Though the appearance of many fungi may resemble plants, they are probably more closely related to animals. Fungi are not capable of performing photosynthesis, so must get their nourishment from other sources. Many fungi absorbnutrients directly from t he soil. Many others feed on dead and decaying organisms and therefore have an important role in the recycling of nutrients in natural systems. Still others feed on living organisms. Athlete's foot is a common fungus which feeds on a living host - you!

AUTOTROPHS

organisms that can "make their own food" from an inorganic source of carbon (carbon dioxide)given a source of energy. Most autotrophs use sunlight in the process of photosynthesis to make their own food.

Photosynthesis is the name of the process which autotrophs use to convert water, carbon dioxide, and solar energy into sugars and oxygen. Examples of autotrophs are plants and algae (shown in the picture).
Autotrophs are the producers of the food chain. The word autotrophcomes from the Greek autos=self and trophe=nutrition

ALGA (SINGULAR OF ALGAE) IS AN EXAMPLE OF AN
AUTOTROPH BECAUSE IT IS CAPABLE OF PHOTOSYNTHESIS.

PHOTOSYNTHESIS

Photosynthesis is the name of the process by which autotrophs (self-feeders) convert water, carbon dioxide, and solar energy into sugars and oxygen.

It is a complex chemical process by which plants and otherautotrophs create the energy needed for life. The sugars made during photosynthesis are the food the plant uses for energy.

Photosynthesis of plants is very important. It also makes the oxygen you and all animals need to breathe. The reverse process of photosynthesis is known as respiration.

RESPIRATION

Respirationis the name of the general process where organisms convert sugars and oxygen into biochemical energy. The process happens in all organisms, including animals, plants, fungi, and bacteria. During respiration, energy is created to fuel the different processes necessary to support life.In addition to making useful energy, respiration makes carbon dioxide and water as waste products. The reverse ofrespiration is known as photosynthesis. During photosynthesis, energy from the Sun's rays is used by an autotroph's cell to produce carbohydrates, with oxygen made as a byproduct.

LAB SAFETY RULES
1. Conduct yourself in a responsible manner at all times in the laboratory. 2. Follow all written and verbal instructions carefully. Ifyou do not understand a direction or part of a procedure, ASK YOUR TEACHER BEFORE PROCEEDING WITH THE ACTIVITY. 3. Never work alone in the laboratory. No student may work in the science classroom without the presence of the teacher. 4. When first entering a science room, do not touch any equipment, chemicals, or other materials in the laboratory area until you are instructed to do so.

5.Perform only those experiments authorized by your teacher. Carefully follow all instructions, both written and oral. Unauthorized experiments are not allowed. 6. Do not eat food, drink beverages, or chew gum in the laboratory. Do not use laboratory glassware as containers for food or beverages.
